Is there any way of extracting embedded files from powerpoint so that I can
use them in their original programme.  Using 2002 versions of office with
windows XP.

There are several different ways of going about this, depending on the type of
file you need to extract, but for starters, try PowerPoint's Publish to Web
feature.  That'll create an html file plus a folder (with the same name) full
of support files.  Among those you should find most if not all of the original
images, sounds and such from the presentation.
