You can, so I'm wondering whether I understand the question.  Did you try it?
Did it not work?  What happened?

I opened the presentation with the 20 pictures in then
went to insert, new photos selected the folder with the
40 pictures in, selected all,but they all opened in the
last slide so i had 40 pictures all on top of one another
on the slide 20, so i close without saveing

If you want 60 pictures, open a new presentation file and then go to Insert >
Picture > New Photo Album and locate and select your 60 pictures.  If you want
to do it in two separate steps you should create two presentations/photo albumns
and then merge them.  In other words, you can't utilize New Photo Album twice in
the same presentation because it will replace the first one.

To add more pictures in an existing Photo Album, choose Format | Photo
Album.

Thanks, Geetesh.  I'm not a photo album user so I didn't even check the Format
menu.
