In PowerPoint 2003, I am trying to do a presentation that combines landscape
and portrait slides.  The instructions say use "slide Show"/Action Settings"
to link between two presentations, one in landscape mode the other in
portrait mode.

The problem is "actions settings" is grayed out.  What did I do wrong??

Have you selected an object when you go to Action Settings?  Actions are applied
to objects such as buttons or text, etc.  You have to tell it what object you
want an action to apply to.  You do that by selecting/clicking on one first.
