I want to make an item say fade in and out until the end of the presentation,
but although I can attach both of these actions to an item, it only plays the
last one when I select play til end or play til click. This happens with any
actions from the four categories that are selected.

Look at OfficeOne Animations at http://officeone.mvps.org/anims/anims.html
for getting the continuous fade-in/fade-out animation. There is no generic
multiple animations in a loop kind of effect available natively in PowerPoint
