i'm doing a powerpoint presentation and i was wondering if it was possible to
use a different picture for the background, instead of the ones in the clip
art?

Yes you can.

In your Slide Master (View > Master > Slide Master). You can either insert
an image at this level (Insert > Picture > From File) or

also while in your Slide Master (View > Master > Slide Master): Format >
Background . When the dialog box comes up, click the arrow in the drop down
menu. Select Fill Effects, then click on the Picture tab. Click Select
Picture then Browse for the image you want to insert as your background. Lock
Aspect ration if appropriate. Click Apply.

Hope this helps.

You can click Format > Background.
Click the drop down box, select Fill effect.
Then click picture tab, and add in your own picture.

Alternately, do this in the Slide Master (View > Master > Slide Master) if
you want every slides to have this background.
