When I try to use songs I downloaded (and paid for), I get an error message
saying that the file is digitally protected.  How can I make it work?

You aren't going to like the answer, you can't.  PowerPoint is a vehicle for
distribution and as such can not use media with DRM (Digital Rights
Management).  While you may have paid for the right to listen to the songs,
you did not buy the rights to re-distribute it.
