MS Office Forum / General PowerPoint Questions / November 2005Playing Video Locks Up PPT
I have had this problem for several months. I just upgraded to 2003 from 2000, in the hopes that would solve the problem and the problem hasn't gone away. When I try to play ANY video clip in Power Point, it locks my computer up. I have reinstalled Media Player, downloaded all service packs/updates, downloaded the current Codecs, ran the XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility and used the recommended decoder (as well as experimented with the others). I have changed video acceleration. And I have tired in "safe mode" and the problem is STILL there. In other words, I've tried all the recommendations I can find on the support site (and them some) and it still doesn't work. Help!!!!! I have tried both methods. I also have the same lockup problem with existing presentations that have either been given to me on CD or flash drive. Incidentally, I don't have the problem on my laptop, but I need to use my desktop to create the presentations. I would try Austin suggestions about video driver's and DirectX. Millions of people (including me!) play all types of video clips in PowerPoint. I use PowerPoint 2000, 2002 and 2003 on hundreds of machines and don't have too many problems. When I do it is usually a clip with an odd codec or a machine configuration issue. Check out the Windows Media Player news group sometime. This codec, player, MCI mix and match bits in Windows has caused a lot of confusion and problems.
