In terms of a summary slide, a title is the text that shows in the title
placeholder - the "Click to add title" at the very top of the page. If you
are using a slide layout that doesn't have a title placeholder, then summary
slide shouldn't work with that slide.
Do me a favor... Open the presentation and look at the slide that doesn't
work. Select the text and cut it. Does it get replaced by the words "Click
to add title"? If so, the slide has a title. If not, it doesn't.
If it does, reply to this post and paste in what was in the title. That will
help us all track down what is going on. It would also help to know which
version of PPT you are using....

Kathy,
Thanks for the clarification. My perspective at this point is that a slide
does not necessarily need a title, but it needs a title placeholder in order
for the Summary Slide Button process to accept it. As I looked further I
realized that my student had deleted the title placeholder from the slide. I
suspect PowerPoint has no way to reinstate a title placeholder. It is simple
enough to start over with the slide.
FYI: We are using PowerPoint 2003.
Thanks for you help.

Go to any of the slides, right click on the placeholder and click copy. Go
back to that slide and paste the placeholder. To ensure that the placeholder
has been reinstated, try deleting the title now. You should see "Click to add
Title" now.
Is that what you want?

This won't usually work. What always works is to bring up the Slide Layout
task pane and either re-apply the current layout or apply any layout with a
title placeholder.
