My dell computer was installed with office basic. I have purchased powerpoint
upgrade but the requirements for upgrade do not state office basic 2003 as an
eligible upgrade program. Will I be able to upgrade or will I need the
original powerpoint?

You need the full standalone version of PPT. The upgrade version won't work.
