Can slide number be updated automatically?

Let's say on slide #1, I included "Please refer to slide #5."  Is there a way
not to hardcode "5?"  If I insert a slide before #5, then #5 will become #6.  
Is it possible to arrange for the system to display "Please refer to slide
#6." AUTOMATICALLY?

No, this can't be done automatically.  Unlike Word you don't have REF-Fields
in PowerPoint.
