In slide master, when you change the style of the first point to upper case,
it doesn't take effect in the regular slide view where you add your points.
Why is that?

"Why/" I dont know.... but I'm fairly sure that only settings you can adjust
in Format > Font carry over.

TB in DC,
I would suggest using Shift+F3 as a good alternative to change case quickly.
There is also a change case button you can add to a toolbar of your choice.
Right click next to a toolbar - customize - commands tab - category:
format - change case - drag to toolbar.
