Hi Paula,
This is not a native function of PowerPoint. Unlike Word's chapter
numbering schemes, PowerPoint's slide numbers are strictly sequential
(starting at any number zero or higher and increasing 1 per slide). This is
hard coded into the program and not negotiable.
Now, here are a few questions for you.
Do you actually need sub-page numbering, or will the appearance of sub-page
numbering do for you?
Can slide #3 in your main presentation just link to another presentation
that shows all your sub-pages?
Do you need to be able to print the 16 pages or do you need to be able to
print all the 16 pages and their sub-pages?

Thank you Bill for your response. I ended up just manually entering a page
number footer on the slides for printing. Because I had to email the
presentation to our investor, I was worried about manually changing them, but
your answer confirms my suspicion that it is not possible to automate that
function.
