I have added ovals and rectangles to a particular slide.  When I preview the
slide show, the ovals and rectangles appear on the screen before the actual
page appears for each slide that I have added these features to.  How do I
prevent the oval from apprearing before the actual screen?

Dan,

right click the shape and choose "custom animation"

choose an effect like Appear (or something fancy)

in the 'timeline' is the order that things will appear

Cheers
