There is no hard and fast rule to this one.
some laptops will not 'send the signal' out the back, unless something is
plugged in when the laptop is turned on.
some laptops are not fussy, you can plug the cable in anytime.
most laptops have a magic key combination (unique to each laptop) that says
to the laptop 'please direct the output to'
laptop only
external only
both screens
The magic key combination is something like
function (Fn) F5 (or other key on your laptop)
