I'm trying to create text in the isosceles triangle to make the text fit
within the triangle (text box the same shape as triangle).  Is there any way
to create a text box in the shape of a triangle or what is the best way to do
it?

There is already one there, just click on your Autoshapes, Basic Shapes and select the isosceles triangle

If you mean to follow the outside path of the triangle. You can't in PowerPoint If you want your text to fill your triangle, then it is one character at a time.

Try WordArt. See if this helps:
Click Insert > Picture > WordArt.
Select a style and type in your words.
Ok your way out.
Select the wordart and the wordart toolbar will appear.
Click on the WordArt Shape icon, and select Triangle.
Click and hold on the yellow diamond beside the wordart, adjust it to your
preference.
