I have a wmv file that I want to add to a presentation as a background. I
then want to add text over it; however, when viewing the slide show, the text
goes to back and all you see is the movie.
Is there a way to see the text and have the movie run in the background?

Not natively in PowerPoint. There are add ins that allow some level of
functionality.

Instead of placing the text over the video, try reducing the size of the
video, then place the text at the bottom or on top of the video.
And if you are interested, also see:

As mentioned, this is not a native function of PPT. Here is a one page
overview of how PPT actually plays movies, and a few tips to make things
work better:

Thanks for the replies - I actually ended up using Microsoft Movie Maker to
import, added a Title and then re-export the movie. This is fairly crude,
but seemed to get the job done.
Thanks again for your help.
