In powerpoint presentations, how do I type over a character?

I am working on a powerpoint presentation and can not figure out how to type
over a character (i.e. like in Word, when you hit the INSERT key and then can
type over characters.)

AFAIK You can't, a work around is to select the word and then start typing.
