Installing Quicktime will cause it, *sometimes*.  The simplest fix to try is
to download and reinstall Windows Media Player.

I will try re installing Windows Media player and see but it sees strange.
The mpg's will play now using the media player -- but when I put them into
powerpoint and try to show the slide, powerpoint crashes. SO the problem is
in powerpoint but I have already re installed it. Incidenally windows media
file work OK -- problem is just with mpg's.
