I have a PowerPoint 2000 presentation into which I have inserted images
one to a slide. ( Insert | Picture | From File . .).  I have then
selected the image from a store folder & pressed Insert.  Then I want to
flip certain images so I select the Image in the Normal view & on the
Drawing toolbar I click on Drawing | Rotate or Flip to find the several
commands there are greyed out.

Can anyone suggest why this should be so?  Are these commands only
available for WordArt in PowerPoint 2000?

Some image types in version 2000 can not be rotated.  In 2002(XP), & 2003
most types can be rotated.  It was one of the very appreciated improvements.

Yes.

The ability to rotate and flip images was added in PPT 2002.

You might be able to Ctrl+X to cut and Edit|Paste Special and choose EMF or
WMF to paste. I think EMF/WMF can be rotated in PPT 2000.
