How do I copy my powerpoint presentation onto a DVD-R? I have linked files
(word documents). When I copy the presentation, the files do not
automatically open as they do when I run the presentation from my laptop.

Sounds as if you're talking about a data DVD to play in a computer. If
that's the case, I would use File|Package for CD to resolve all the links.
I'd package to a folder, and then I'd burn the files in the folder (but not
the folder itself) to the DVD. Leave them "loose" on the DVD -- don't put
them in a folder or anything.
