Importing Video Clip

I'm hoping someone can help me because I'm at my wits end. I'm wanting to
insert video clips into a presentation from a DVD movie, but it's not
working. I first decrypted the DVD and after changing the individual file
extension to .avi I was able to import it to my slide and it would play with
audio. The problem was it would not give me the option to adjust the duration
of the clip. I then decided to rip the DVD to .avi, which went fine until I
tried playing the files via Media Player and got the error message "Windows
Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type
or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." I've also
tried importing these ripped .avi files to Windows Moviemaker to adjust the
duration but also keep getting an error message about an unspecified error. I
thought this would be easier then what I've encountered thus far and I'm
hoping someone out there can help save my sanity in getting this presentation
done.

Was this a home made (non-commercial) DVD?

No, this is a commercial DVD

In that case it almost certainly contains DRM (copyright protection) and
PowerPoint will refuse to use it.

The files I decrypted from the file saved as VOB files. When I changed the
extension to AVI they would work in Media Player and in Powerpoint when
imported but it won't allow me to adjust the duration of the clip. Is there
nothing I can do with the decrypted files to adjust the length of them? I
tried importing them to Moviemaker to attempt this, but they won't import,
citing an unspecified error which I'm assuming is due to the size of the
clip. What's frustrating is I've seen presentations where commercial movie
clips were used and I don't understand how it was accomplished.
