I am attempting to complete MS Office courses on animations in PowerPoint,
and whenever I access the slide design task pane all the animations are
"grayed out".  I selected a slide from the laft task pane first, just as
instructed, but I am only able to access Design Templates & Color Schemes.
Help??

What version of ppt is it?

If XP / 2003 check in Tools > Options > Edit tab that none of the "disable
new features" checkboxes is ticked (especially "new animation effects")

Did that answer the question / help?
