How do I fade out the music, instead of stopping abruptly?

I have music accompanying my presentation, but I want the songs to fade out
each time I am at the end of the group of slides. Right now the music just
stops abruptly when I get to the end of the slide series.

Unfortunately you cannot do this in PowerPoint.  However, you could use
Audacity which is free - download here: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Thanks to John Wilson for this tip :-)

Audacity doesn't work *with* PowerPoint, actually.  It's an independent program
that you can use to edit your sound files.

You'd have to open your sound file in Audacity, modify it as needed, save it, then
re-insert it into PPT (unless it's a linked sound, in which case PPT would
automatically use the updated version, so long as you save it to the same name and
directory, overwriting the original).

In Audacity, you'd want to select the section of your sound file you want to fade
out, then choose Effect, Fade Out.
