My individual audio file plays fine the first time the slide is accessed, but
when I branch back to the slide after accessing other slides in the
presentation, the audio file does not play again.

Is there any way to make the audio file play again when you branch back to
that same slide?

When you return to a slide, PPT comes in at the end state. So you need to
come into the slide before -- or into a dummy slide with an automatic
00-second transition.

Animations don't play when I go back to a slide

I actually tried that as soon as I noticed another posting on this site, but
I was unsuccessful. I inserted a blank slide before the one I wanted to
replay, set slide transition to 00:00 and when I called that slide from
another custom animation button on a subsequent slide, it goes to the blank
slide, but stays there. Am using  Version 2003.

Check that in slide show > set up show >the box for "advance slides > using
timings if present" is ticked.
