How can I animate ink annotations?

I would like to be able to animate the ink annotations I make in PowerPoint.  
I don't really understand why this would not be possible.  The ink
annotations seem to behave like drawing objects in every other way.

If you cut out the ink annotation (Edit - Cut or Ctrl+X) and re-insert it as
a WMF using Edit - Paste Special - Windows Metafile, you can edit it like
any other object.
