Hello
Can anyone tell me how to start a .AVI file automatically as soon as you
enter a slide and the next slide to come up automatically when the video
finishes.

Thanks

Use Insert Movie From File and when asked, check "Play Automatically".  Then
set the slide transition (right click the slide and select transition) to
advance automatically after x seconds.  I usually set this time to something
LESS than the duration of the video.  Because the video is still playing PPT
will not advance until it's done.  Because you set the time to something
less than the video duration the "timer" has already reached zero so the
transition is immediate after the video has completed.
