In Powerpoint 2000 it was possible to change the headings listed in the
outline tab. Since upgrading to Powerpoint 2003 I'm unable to edit any of the
titles listed in the Outline tab without it changing the title for the
relevant slide.

I don't recall this being possible in 2000, either. What you type in the
outline shows up in the slide placeholders. You can drag the placeholders
off the edge of the slide if you want, though.

I think I did not explain this corrently so I will add more detail.

In Powerpoint 2003 the text  in the outline tab is set to bold and if remove
the bold from the title placeholder from the slide it does not remove the
bold from title in the outline tab.

In Powerpoint 2000 you can remove the bold from a listing in the outline tab
and will not apply to the title placeholder on the relevant slide.

Thanks.

In both PPT 2000 and 2003 you have the option of viewing formatted text in the
outline or not.  It sounds as though you have it turned off in one PPT version
and on in the other.

If the Outline toolbar is not already visible, choose View, Toolbars, Outline.
On the outline toolbar, the right or bottommost button is a kind of A/A icon.
Click it to toggle outline formatting on and off.
