Sometimes file extensions are stripped for one reason or another. Try adding
.ppt after the file then try to open........TD

Go to Help menu and choose Check for Updates. Follow the instructions to
install the latest service packs. That is likely to clear up your problem.

First:
Make Windows show file extensions and hidden files
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00781.htm
Now have a look at the file in Windows Explorer and tell us what its name is.
If it has any spaces in the name, try renaming the file to remove the spaces
.. does that improve things?
