When I save slides that I have just created in PowerPt2003, the following
message comes up:
You are saving most recently updated ppt. in a format compatible with
PowerPoint 95 and later. Saving a file in this format will remove any
restrictions on this document and may significantly increase the size of the
file. Do you want to save the presentation in this format?
What does this mean--in what format should I be saving it in?

When you save as choose the "save as type" in the drop down menu. Unnless you
have a special reason always choose the first option "presentation (*.ppt)"
or "powerpoint show (*.pps)" if you want a self running show. Never use
powerpoint 95 OR powerpoint 97- 2003 & 95 unless you know that someone will
be using 95 as you will get giant files.
.ppt is fine for 97 onwards

Many thanks to John, Echo and Steve for coming back so promptly and well to me.

In addition to John's advice, you may have the default save set to "PPT
97-2003 & 95" or "95 Presentation." Change this default setting in
Tools|Options on the Save tab under "Save PPT files as." You want just plain
ol' "PowerPoint Presentation" selected there.

What John said. But if this is happening automatically w/o your deliberately
saving as an older file type, do this:
From the main menu, choose Tools, Options
In the Options dialog, click on the Save tab
On the Save tab look at the option chosen for "Save Powerpoint files as:"
It should say "PowerPoint Presentation"
My guess is that it's set to something else.
You'll want to change that. I'd then open and resave any files you've already
saved the old way. Among other things, they'll probably get much smaller,
especially if you have any images in 'em.
