Running .avi movies in PP

I use movie strips in my PP presentations.  I have used them for over a year.
Previously I was using 2002 and using .avi was not a problem
Last week I converted to 2003.
I was in the middle of preparing a presentation when I converted.
I had included in the old 2002 version some .avi films that worked fine.
Now I find that when I add a .avi film any number of things can happen.
If I click on the film in explorer it runs fine.
If I add it to a presentation and then right click and run 'play' it works:
sometimes.
If I start presentation and click on movie I get blank white screen.
Has anyone encounter similar problems with 2003?
Does anyone know of a solution to the problem?

Known issue in 03.  You need to shorten the path name to the video.  Try
moving the presentation and video to "C:\Test" and see if it works for you.
