Hi Ilene,
You forgot to mention the Input/output ports of your laptop and 50" monitor
BUT if have DVI-VGA ports on both then your problem is solved. DVI is the
future and more quality movie screen.

I am running a powerpoint slide show off a a laptop hooked into a 50"
monitor. I want the slides to fill the screen with no black spaces and I
need to know how to do that.

Oops! One more thing: Change video resolution; Right click empty area on desktop > Properties > Settings > make change to 800 x 600
pixels or lesser.
