In creating or editing PP presentations how do you monitor the file size
content of each slide? It is easy for presentations to become very large
fast. The practical goal is to be able to email presentations (5MB).

If you save as a web page (html) and look in the folder of files you'll get a
good idea where the bloat is.

Check out Bill's SizeMe add-in (currently in beta) which allows you to check
the size of slides and objects in the presentation:
