Office 2003 - I cannot figure out how to get powerpoint from inserting an old
template slide when I click new slide.
The original template opens fine, with two slides of the correct
design, master looks good, but the slide inserted is wrong.  Correct slide is
saved as default.

Where is it getting the wrong one from?

Open your slide design task pane (Format > Slide Design). Look at the
thumbnails on the right. If you mouse over them (start at the top) you can
see which slides are using which slide masters. Click on the thumbnail drop
down for any particular master, apply as desired.
