How do I convert a powerpoint to a (.avi) format?

You'll need a third party program. I use Camtasia from tech smith

If you don't have Camtasia, which is probably the best way to go, you can
convert your slides to image files and drop them in a video editing program
like Windows Movie Maker.  You won't get any slide animations but you will
get to set timings and transitions.  Another great product to check out for
video output is OfficeFX at www.instanteffects.com.
