In powerpoint, how do I apply a templet to only one slide?

Whenever I select a templete, it applies to all slides.  I want to apply
different templets to each slide.  I am using Windows XP, powerpoint 2003.

Hover your mouse over the template and in the drop down that appears choose
apply to selected slides
