I hope someone knows how to solve this. An existing presentation had a
different template applied to it. None of the slides changed to relfect the
newly applied template. If a new slide is added, the new template design
appears.

Any ideas on how to fix this without a lot of wasted time reformatting?

Click Format > Slide Design.
This will bring up the Slide Design task pane.
Under "Used in this presentation", hover over the new template icon.
A dropdown arrow will appear.
Click on it and select Apply to all slides.

Go to an affected slide Format > background. Is omit background graphics from
master ticked? If so untick and apply to all (make sure color is set to
automatic)

Did that answer the question / help?

Hi John:

I should have described better. The issue isn't background. The issue is the
slide's font type and size, color, and bullet type did not change to the new
template's design; text wrapping got turned off too. It's labor intensive to
go  to each slide to fix.  Any ideas on a way to make the changes needed more
global?

Thoughts ?

You aren't going to like this thought, but it sounds like the person either
did a lot of custom (read: hand) formatting to your presentation or they
created the whole thing without using the placeholders.

If they didn't use the placeholders, then the formatting you describe won't
be applied to the slide elements. You will need to do a lot of work to move
the content to the placeholders.

On the other hand, the content is in placeholders but is not accepting the
formatting, there is a cheat you can try. Select one of the misbehaving
slides and bring up the layout task pane. Reapply the layout TWICE. See if
your changes now show. You can do this slide by slide, or you can select
(using control click) the slides that all have the same layout and do them
together.

Makes sense?
