Powerpoint 2007 crashes when applying chart templates

I have powerpoint 2003 presentation with loads of charts, and have converted
this presentation (and each of the charts) to be compatible with Powerpoint
2007 (I've downloaded the beta tech refresh). I have created and saved a new
chart template which takes advantage of the more advanced chart display
options in Powerpoint 2007, and I want to apply this template to each of the
charts in my converted presentation.

However, whenever I try to change the chart type so that I can apply my
template to a particular chart, powerpoint crashes. I've tried this with a
variety of charts in my converted presentation, with a variety of
user-generated templates, and also with a brand new chart in a brand new
Powerpoint 2007 presentation, and it always crashes when I try to apply a
template.

Has anyone else come across this?
Many thanks
Matt

I was using the chart templates just yesterday and Thursday, and they didn't
cause PPT to crash -- at least not with new charts, I wasn't working with
existing charts.

Try running the diagnostics in File|PPT Options|Resources.

Many thanks Echo. I've run the diagnostics but there's nothing showing as
wrong.

If I make a new chart I can apply my custom template when I first create it,
and I can switch between any of the MS pre-installed chart types withoout any
problems, but if I apply any one of my saved templates to an existing chart,
either in a new or converted presentation, it crashes.

Any other ideas? I have 50 or so charts in my presentation and would really
like a quick way of smartening them up consistently using the new features in
PPT 2007.

Ah, I misunderstood. Let me try it here tomorrow with some existing 2003
charts and see what happens.

Only thing I can suggest in the interim is to use one of the preset chart
styles.

Thanks Echo. I would be very interested to hear how you get on with 2003
charts and 2007 user templates - otherwise, as you say, I think I'm stuck
with the preset templates.

Hi, Matt --

Well, I have good news and bad.

The good news is, it happens to me, too.

The bad news is, it happens to me, too.

The worse news is, it happens to PPT 2007 charts, too.

Basically, if you create a chart in PPT 2007, save and close the file, then
if you apply a chart template, PPT crashes. Now, if you just save the file
and don't close it, PPT doesn't crash and the template is applied as we'd
expect.

If I apply a chart template to an existing 2003 chart (after I select the
option to convert to 2007 chart), PPT crashes.

I guess when I was working with this last week, I didn't actually close and
reopen the files I was working with, so I wasn't seeing the behavior.

I thought maybe if you applied one of the presets or used "reset to match
style" on the Chart Tools Layout tab, you could then apply a chart template.
Unfortunately, that doesn't work either. You can apply a preset or "reset,"
but you can't apply a chart template. So I guess you're in for some manual
labor.

I don't have a good workaround. Sure wish I did! I've reported the issue to
Microsoft -- I'll let you know if I find anything out. With any luck, they
already know about it and have already fixed it. (You did send the error
reports, right? :-)  )

Echo,

Thanks very much for testing this out - at least I know it's not just me!

Thanks for reporting this - I did indeed send the error reports!

Glad to hear it. Latest word is that this is fixed in the lastest internal
builds in use at Microsoft. So hopefully it will stay fixed for the released
version! :-)

Seems it is only fixed on Windows XP, though, and not on Windows Vista.
