Thanks Echo. I would be very interested to hear how you get on with 2003
charts and 2007 user templates - otherwise, as you say, I think I'm stuck
with the preset templates.

Hi, Matt --
Well, I have good news and bad.
The good news is, it happens to me, too.
The bad news is, it happens to me, too.
The worse news is, it happens to PPT 2007 charts, too.
Basically, if you create a chart in PPT 2007, save and close the file, then
if you apply a chart template, PPT crashes. Now, if you just save the file
and don't close it, PPT doesn't crash and the template is applied as we'd
expect.
If I apply a chart template to an existing 2003 chart (after I select the
option to convert to 2007 chart), PPT crashes.
I guess when I was working with this last week, I didn't actually close and
reopen the files I was working with, so I wasn't seeing the behavior.
I thought maybe if you applied one of the presets or used "reset to match
style" on the Chart Tools Layout tab, you could then apply a chart template.
Unfortunately, that doesn't work either. You can apply a preset or "reset,"
but you can't apply a chart template. So I guess you're in for some manual
labor.
I don't have a good workaround. Sure wish I did! I've reported the issue to
Microsoft -- I'll let you know if I find anything out. With any luck, they
already know about it and have already fixed it. (You did send the error
reports, right? :-) )

Echo,
Thanks very much for testing this out - at least I know it's not just me!
Thanks for reporting this - I did indeed send the error reports!

Glad to hear it. Latest word is that this is fixed in the lastest internal
builds in use at Microsoft. So hopefully it will stay fixed for the released
version! :-)

Seems it is only fixed on Windows XP, though, and not on Windows Vista.
