I have a Dell laptop and whenever I launch Powerpoint it increases the
font size or display size of my laptop.  I have to reset it every time.

Most probably the slide show resolution is set within the presentation. Do
the following:
1. Open the presentation in PowerPoint.
2. Select "Slide Show" | "Set Up Show..." menu item.
3. Select "[Use Current Resolution]" item in the "Slide show resolution"
box.
4. Click OK.

Now when you start the slide show, does it still resize the display?
