powerpoint file. ppt. software needed to enable email download

we have received an email with attachment in powerpoint ppt  we currently
have microsoft xp home edition. we have tried to open this email using word,
notepad but without success.
are we required to purchase microsoft powerpoint.ppt to enable us to read
this email. or are we getting it wrong.
maybe you are aware of free downloads that are legitamate

any suggestions

Yes ... there's a free viewer that'll let you view and print Powerpoint files.
