I am working on a slide with many object (pictures, lines, groups and text
boxes).  To select different objects I use the 'Select Multiple Objects'
option which brings up a box with all the objects with tick boxes.  My
problem is that each object has an automatic name such as Line 132 or Picture
173.  Only the text boxes are easy to identify as the text they contain is
given.  How can I rename the objects so that they are simple to identify in
this list?

Nic,
Unfortunately this is not possible in version PPT 2003. Starting with PPT
2007 there is such a thing as a selection pane, a task pane wich allows you
to rename all the objects on a slide.

Try this Nic

Right click a shape > format autoshape

In the web tab add some alt text to describe the shape

Close and check out select multi objects!
