This is going to sound a really stupid question. I'm only a newbie. Just
learned how to do powerpoint presentations. Very proud of myself. showed up
great on my laptop. then i suddenly thought - how do i show it in a
conferance situation. i,e, where it is projected on the wall from the laptop?
thanks for your help

Not sure what you want to ask about. Do you want to know how to view the
presentation in slide show mode?
There is a slide show icon at the bottom left hand corner of PowerPoint.
Click on it to start slide show.
You can also click Slide Show > View Show.
Or press F5 on the keyboard to start the show.
Another way is to save your presentation as PowerPoint Show. To do so, click
File > Save As. Click on the dropdown list, scroll down and look for
PowerPoint Show (.pps). Click Ok. When double clicking on the pps, you will
be brought to the slide show immediately.

no, im fine getting the slide show working on the laptop. But i have seen
people project the finished slide show on to the wall of a room somehow
rather than just using the screen of the laptop. In a large room it would not
carry very well. So what would be the mechanism that would allow me to do
this? something outside of the laptop itself and connection through a USB
port?
thanks

Your laptop should have a VGA connection that looks like this:
http://pptblog.tlccreative.com/index.php/all/2006/10/11/laptop_consideration_1
You will then need to use a VGA cable to connect the laptop to the
projector. Have a look at the tutorial here:

Connect a projector to the laptop. To get your screen to show up on the
projected image, you press Fn and an F-key (which varies by laptop model --
it's F7 here, for example) to toggle between three views: display on laptop
screen only, display on projector screen only, or display on both laptop
screen and projector screen.

And you found the best place around to get support for even newbie (NOT
stupid!) questions. Newbie, maybe, but no dummy.
Have a look here:

Basically, you'll need to hook your computer's external video up to a
projector, press whatever magic keyboard combo sends the screen image to both
the laptop and external screens, then start the show.
