frustrated mom - 19 Nov 2006 22:47 GMT when i click package to cd to burn my ppt project in windows xp i get an window that opens and says cannot copy files, why does this happen and what can i do?
Echo S - 20 Nov 2006 00:17 GMT Try using copy to folder instead, then burn the contents of that folder to the CD as a separate step. (Don't burn the folder, just burn the *contents* of the folder so they're "loose" on the CD.)

I'm sorry for being so ignorant about this but what should i do with it now. Do i use different software to copy it to cd? Would you mind taking me through it step by step? I would really appreciate it. I have 3 songs on the ppt. project as well, will that make a difference or not?

Do i highlight everything in the folder and just drag and drop it to sonic and if so what tab do i press, music cd, data cd or what? There are quite a few things in the folder from the ppt project to the music and lots of other things, dll things. Do i drag all of it to sonic?

Do i highlight everything > in the folder and just drag and drop it to sonic and if so what tab do i > press, music cd, data cd or what? You want to choose Data CD in Sonic. And you've hit it right on the head: drag everything from the folder where you packaged for CD (DLL files and everything) to into the Sonic window and record the CD.
If you'll be giving the CD to someone else, it's a *very* good idea to first choose Tools, Options; Click Data and choose "I only need to use disks for one recording) .."
And Put a check next to "Verify data ..."
That should be about all there is to it.

frustrated mom - 20 Nov 2006 05:18 GMT Hi Steve, Thanks for responding. I did everything you said but an error window comes up after the burning process has started and says cannot write to cd. When i click the explain button it says to clean the cd, make sure no fingerprints etc. but it is a brand new one right out of the package. What should i do? Any suggestions? I've been working on this for over a week, hopefully there's help out there. Thanks.

I think at this point I'd be tempted to call the Sonic people for help with troubleshooting the actual burn process.

First, I'd quit Windows and power the computer down. Let it sit while you do some deep-breathing exercises for a couple minutes to regain calm. Start it up again and see if it'll work now.
Then try burning a CD again. If it won't work, it's a bit out of our department (ie, not a PPT problem), but some other things to try:
- Make sure you're using regular CDs not Rewriteable ones; if you have rewriteable ones, you need to format them before trying to burn anything to them.
- Try a different brand of CD blanks
- If you really need to get the project done and can't manage to get your own burner working, try copying everything to a USB memory stick (1gb ones are under $20 these days) and take it to a friend's house, burn a CD there.

frustrated mom - 20 Nov 2006 18:00 GMT Hi Steve, Thanks for the sound advice of taking a deep breath. It worked at calming me down but unfortunately it still won't burn. As per your question, it is cd-r not rewritable and i have tried different brands. I think i've gone through 15 up to date. Dell techs says i should wipe everything off my computer and reinstall everything again. But let me ask you this, i have inserted 3 songs into the ppt project that i have downloaded from limewire. They are mp3, does that make a difference or not? If it doesn't then i think i should do what tech says and wipe everything off. I did buy a memory key 1gb and will download all pics. and such onto that before i wipe out. As for the project b/c we couldn't get it to work my son got a 40% for doing a collage instead of ppt. No justice these days. Thanks for trying everyone.

I'm sorry to hear the Dell techs don't have a better answer for you, and I'm even sorrier to hear your son's grade suffered because of misbehaving technology.
Too bad he couldn't just take the packaged folder to school on a USB memory stick and use that instead of fighting with actually burning a CD.

OK, time to escalate to the next level of tech support. Try gin. ;-)
But in the meanwhile ... (and by the way, I'm sorry to hear about your son's grade; I have to agree that this isn't at all fair.)

Can you burn *anything* to the CD? Not PPT files but some little text file, for example?
Do you have RealPlayer or any other software from Real on the system? Something of theirs totally screwed up CD burning on one of my machines; removing Real(anything) fixed it.

frustrated mom - 21 Nov 2006 05:26 GMT Hi Guys, I tried to burn a data cd and it said it was successful but when i put the cd into the d drive to view it, nothing happened. So i went into my computer and clicked on the d drive and a window popped up and said insert a cd. So then i went into windows media player and clicked now playing, then clicked d drive, it said no cd in drive d. So it's not reading it. I'm just so flustered and don't know what to do. But for now on will just use the memory stick for any more projects. Do you just copy and paste the whole folder with say a ppt project to the memory stick? I really appreciate all of the suggestions guys. There must be something wrong i just don't know what.
> when i click package to cd to burn my ppt project in windows xp i get an > window that opens and says cannot copy files, why does this happen and what > can i do? Echo S - 21 Nov 2006 16:03 GMT Based on that description, I have a thought -- are you "closing" the CD when you burn it? I don't know the Sonic software (I use Nero here), but you would want to un-select anything that says "allow files to be burned later (multisession disk)," or *select* anything that says "close session after burning." Many older CD/DVD drives especially have difficulty reading multisession (non-closed) disks. (You might also have an option to "verify data" after you burn the CD -- that would also be worth a try to see if it helps, as would burning at a slower speed (say 8x instead of 24x).)
For your other question, when you put the files on the CD, you want to just burn the contents of the folder so the files are "loose" on the CD. This allows Windows to see the files that let the CD automatically run the PPT Viewer and open the presentation.
You can't autorun files like that on a memory stick, though, so yes, you would just copy and paste the folder full of files to the stick. To run a presentation from the Viewer on the stick, open the folder and double-click the play.bat file. That will open the Viewer and the appropriate presentation file.

This can sometimes happen if you don't "close" the CD after writing to it (this might also be called "finalize" ... basic idea is that you set it so no more files can be written to it). The Sonic options settings I mentioned earlier should prevent that, so if you followed those suggestions, we can rule this out.
