When I click on a hyperlink to an .AVI file the movie starts and runs but it
runs in the background of PowerPoint. The only solution I have found is to
change the hyperlink to open this as a program but then I always get the
security warning. This always worked in the past. Help please since I have
been struggling with this for some time.
Office 2003 - fully up to date.

Have you tried shutting down and restarting?

Yes, I have been fighting with this for a few days so the machine has been
restarted many times.

My next best solution is to try www.pfcmedia.com and see if it will fix the
problem for you.  I've had this problem with Outlook, but darned if i can
remember exactly what the fix was.  Sorry.
