I have a slide show displaying on a 42 inch screen, windows xp displays fine
and fills screen but when i start slide show, either side i have a six inch
black strip. The slides are in landscape and i do not see any options to
fill screen.
Any help appreciated.

You will probably have to build your presentation to fit the 16x9 format.
Taking you original presentation and changing the page size will not do it,
as it squishes all the material. You will have to start with a 16x9
presentation and re insert all your slide information.

You'll need to change the page setup to accomodate the widescreen aspect
ratio.  Troy Chollar has posted detailed info on The PowerPoint blog:

Sounds like your slides are in a different proportion than the video display.
Powerpoint won't distort your slides to make them force-fill a screen of
different proportions.

As a test, start a new presentation, use File, Slide Setup to set the slide
size to something that matches your display's proportions, then see if the
resulting slides fill the screen.
