Most Audio Clips no longer play in 2007 PowerPoint

PPT-maker - 21 Jun 2007 19:29 GMT For past several years have had no problems running .wav, .mp3, or .wma clips in PPT 2003 under XP Pro. ---- Workplace has now switched my laptop to office 2007, and so I changed computers to a Dell xps 410 running Vista Ultimate and office 2007. --PPTs have the traditional "ppt" extension and the top of screen indicates I am in [compatiblity mode]" --I then "publish | package for cd" without viewer as my laptop already has office 2007 installed. --Noticed that my audio-video clips now get prefaced with the software used to open and play. Have been using Ashampoo Photo Commander 5 for trims and sorts and see "APC.MP3," or "APC.AVI," or "APC.WMA" in the type column. Set default to be Windows media player, and designations went away, but audio clips will still not play. --Video clips .AVI, .MPG, and, of course, .WMV all play fine alone and within PowerPoint. ============== --Some .WMA clips play and others do not --NO .MP3 clips play whatsoever. I have tried delete and then insert but no success. --ALL clips were recorded prior to 1920, so should be no DRM issues. --Am on cable broadband and notice that if I double-click on an mp3 clip within File Explorer, there is a delay of 4 seconds, then Net activity, then begins playing at the ten second mark. Assume this is consistent with checked box to "download codecs automatically." --Do NOT see same Net activity after "packaging for CD" on the Vista Dell and then running on the XP Pro laptop, but MP3s and WMAs no longer play back. ============== --a friend suggested to me that office 2007 is VERY strict as to the "legal nature" of media clips and I may have some .MP3 clips that were created under the lame codec which he thought Microsoft office would not recognize. --He suggested that I dl the Fraunhofer codec which Office 2007 supports, along with the MS Media Encoder and then run all of my audio through the Media Encoder to ensure the "Fraunhofer seal of approval" from PPT. --I purchased the Dell with Vista Ultimate already installed, along with Media Player 11.0.6000.6324, so when I went to the MS website to dl Media Converter I was informed this would be version 9 and sent Vista owners to "article 929182 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base" for the hotfix to the issue of running under Vista. Tried to dl and install, but is in a loop requiring me to pre-install some other program first, then keeps coming back to the first program: Net result is NO install.

Can anybody help? I am already a week behind on several PowerPoint presentations. There is NO online help I can locate (aside from this forum), and am wondering if I should dump Vista and go back to XP Pro and office 2003 ?
Austin Myers - 21 Jun 2007 20:05 GMT Any chance you are on Vista?

Office laptop has always been XP Pro and office 2003 until a few weeks ago. Now, the laptop is still xp pro, but with office 2007 installed.

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Codec-Packs-Video-Codecs/Advanced- Vista-Codec-Package.shtml
On the XP pro machine, I would suggest downloading and re-installing Windows Media Player 10. (Not 11) This should sort out any codec issues.

Just where would one find these codecs in my OS ??? And apparently, I delete ALL of them, eh?
Thanks Austin for your help. MUCH appreciated !

PPT-maker - 22 Jun 2007 17:49 GMT --Downloaded the Vista media codecs and no change. --Discovered that the HP laptop (xp pro and office 2007) already had media player 10, not 11 (hmmmm.... would have thought that MS would have taken the opportunity to upgrade), so no change there.
Next, loaded some old PPTs (office 2003) that contained wma, wav, and mp3 files into my Vista Dell (with office 2007) and ALL audio worked well. --Then saved PPT and audio-linked files to USB and tried in my old XP Pro with office 2003; worked great. --Then plugged usb into xp pro laptop with office 2007 and all clips worked well.
So, sat down with a LARGE cup of coffee to ponder the variables, and remembered that in my excitement to try out the new office 2007 I had saved the PPT in that format. Then, the next day, switched the file format to "office 2003 compatible" and that is where the corruption happened! As usual, operator error...
For giggles, opened an old xp pro-2003 PPT on my Dell Vista Ultimate-2007 and saved the PPT as "office 2003 compatible" and the resulting PPT works well on all three machines.
One extra note to this: AFTER switching from 2007 to 2003 compatible format I DID delete and reinstall the audio clips, but since the actual PowerPoint had been corrupted from the two transfers, it wouldn't have mattered what I had tried... that powerpoint is fried! The irony in all of this is the Microsoft website goes to great pains to point out that with office 2007 using XML, corrupted files will be a thing of the past. Well, IMHO, there's a bit more of work to be done on those files.
Thanks Austin for your help. I hope your PFCPro will, one day, be Vista compatible as I'll be your first customer....
Kathy Jacobs - 22 Jun 2007 18:08 GMT Ummm... Confusion here.. I run PFC Pro on Vista (tested it even :) ) Can you share what isn't working there? (I love to break Austin's code... And he knows it....)

PPT-maker - 22 Jun 2007 18:50 GMT Kathy: just what I was reading on their product website: http://www.playsforcertain.com/index.htm -- There is only mention of office 2000, 2003, 2007 and XP.
There is no statement that the programs work on Vista. In fact, also searched the other pages of the website and no mention of Vista compatibility that I could find.
I'm glad to hear that it does indeed work in Vista, and hopefully they will support the product under Vista as well.
Thanks for the correction!

Kathy Jacobs - 22 Jun 2007 21:28 GMT Ah... understand the confusion. The XP he is talking about there is Office XP (also known as Office 2002). When you do the download now, it even checks to see which version of Office and which OS you have and installs the product version that you need for your combination.
