What happens if you click on a slide in outline mode and type some text in the
outliner?

I was given a template to start with and the original slides will not show
text in outline mode, no matter what I do.  If I create new slides, they work
fine.  I've given up and have started creating all new slides.  Thanks so
much for your prompt reply.

OK, but that doesn't answer my question.

There may be a way around redoing all the slides, but if it's easier for you to
re-make them, that's fine.

Only text added to a placeholder (where it says "click to add text" or
"click to add title") will show up in the outline pane.

I was given a template to start with, but I added text the way you describe -
in the text box where it says "click to add text".  I have created new slides
in the template and they are fine.  Only the slides that were in the original
template are giving me trouble.  I've exhausted my research capabilities and
am giving up.  I'm just creating all new slides.  Thanks so much for your
speedy reply.

Try applying an appropriate slide layout to the existing slides. Format |
Slide Layout. You should get the "click to add" placeholders, then, and you
can copy/paste the text into the placeholders.
