I've a picture as background on slides.  How can I make the background
lighter or more translucent so the overlayed text shows better?

Few ways:
Click View > Master > Slide Master.
Insert a rectangle autoshape which covers the entire slide.
Double click on the rectangle.
Set the fill to white, transparency to 85%, No line.
Send the autoshape to the back.
Close Master View.

Alternately,
Remove the background.
Click View > Master > Slide Master.
Insert the background by click Insert > Picture.
Send the picture to the back.
Click Slide Show > Custom Animation.
Click Add Effect > Emphasis > Transparency.
Set it to 80-95%.
Set the Start to "With Previous".
Close Master View.

Hello,

As another alternative, for PowerPoint 2007 users.

* Right-Click in an empty area on the slide and choose "Format Background
.." command from the contextual menu.  [NOTE: If the slide background is
already a picture fill, the "Fill" option selected should be "Picture or
texture fill"
* At the bottom of the "Fill" tab of the dialog, adjust the Transparency
setting until the background picture is at the desired level.
* Close the dialog.

Hope this helps.

Clear helpful response.  In the alternate, how do I remove the background?
Thanks,
Carson

Format > Background.
Click on the dropdown bar, select Automatic. Apply to All.
