We have a large web site used by Microsoft sales people.  This site is
protected by windows live id.

The site provides links to and hosts sales materials - including office
documents, excel sheets, powerpoints, etc.

People using Office 2007 have had an issue opening PowerPoint files.  When
they click a PowerPoint link, and choose "Open" instead of Save, the
PowerPoint file opens with a bunch of weird images in it.  After further
inspection - saving the file as html and inspecting the source - it is the
Windows-Live-ID sign-in page.  Apparently PowerPoint is trying to serve this
page.

This does not happen with word, excel, etc - only with powerpoint - and only
in Office 2007.  It is as if PowerPoint does not have access to the user's
credentials from internet explorer.

Since this is not a public site we could ask our users to install a patch or
change some settings...  Any ideas of a fix or work-around?

Talked to Microsoft Support and they pointed me to this knowledgebase article:

The associated hotfix fixed my issue.
