One of my PCs has a problem editing any objects that I put in to it from
Equation Editor (or Word, etc.). I get a message that "Microsoft Office
Powerpoint can't start the application required to open this object. An
error occurred...", and if I say no, I get a second error that "The
server application, source file, or item can't be found, or returned an
unknown error. You may need....." If I say yes, it tries to repair the
software, but ends up giving the second error when done anyway. I can
add and edit Equation objects within Word without problems.

I have uninstalled Office 2003, cleaned the registry from references to
Powerpoint or Equation, the reinstalled including service packs, to no
avail. I am totally frustrated, and am not sure what to do at this point.

Thank you Bill.

I have seen that, however, and none of the suggestions seem to help.

That's pretty surprising actually; normally it's the Office
plug-in in Norton Antivirus that causes that.

Couple of options here...

1. Try opening Equation Editor separately. To do that, click
Start > Run > Browse, and choose Equation Editor from this path:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\EQUATION\EQNEDT32.EXE

When you click OK, that should open Equation Editor separately,
then you can use it in PowerPoint via copy & paste.

2. Try the MathType evaluation from the link below. We created
the Equation Editor to license to Microsoft, but it was created
from MathType, so MathType has many more symbols, templates, and
other features (one of which is equation color). When you install
MathType, it will put an icon onto your PowerPoint toolbar that
you'll use to insert equations. (The icon is a blue capital Greek
letter Sigma.) There's no manual with MathType, but the Help file
is pretty extensive and has several tutorials to get you started.
