When I click in the Excel worksheet to open excel and drag the sizing handles
it seems to work.  However, when I click out of excel back to the PowerPoint
slide it appears that my change only expanded the column or row width rather
than expanding the visibility.  It also seems to add gridlines to my
powerpoint slide which weren't there initially.   (I know how to clear the
gridlines)

Hmmm,
It doesn't work that way for me here. What version are you using and
please walk us through the steps you are doing in more detail.
Especially, how are you pasting the Excel object that you have copied
to clipboard.
